My New Year's resolutions for a saner life

Mind Body Spirit

It’s probably an understatement to say that 2017 was crazy for me. Between finalizing the build of our home and a busy year in real estate thanks to the HOT Indianapolis market, I sometimes didn’t know if I was coming or going. I salute all of you who have built custom homes—it is a TON of work, and even I didn’t fully appreciate the time and mental space it would take up. And of course, real estate is a 24/7/365 job—I love it, but it was a whirlwind this past year.

Healthier habits in the new year

That brings me to my resolution for 2018—I want to get back to carving out time for healthy habits, in particular, exercising on a regular basis and practicing mindfulness. Before 2017, I started my day with exercise four or five mornings every week. Sadly, I’ve fallen out of this habit, and I can tell. Beyond burning calories and building muscle, exercise helps me sleep better, relieves stress and boosts my mood. Not to mention all the other long-term benefits—reducing the risk of heart disease and other illnesses, building stronger bones and staving off the ill effects of aging. As my husband AJ says, “Hurt now, or hurt later!” I can’t wait to get back in the gym with my personal trainer Maurice!

And we’ve heard so much about practicing mindfulness lately and its benefits, like reducing anxiety and building concentration. In the midst of the whirlwind that tends to be my life, I resolve to regularly stop, take some deep breaths and focus on the present moment. I know it won’t be easy, but this is a little gift I can give myself every day.

How do you take care of yourself?

What benefits do you derive from exercise, mindfulness and other healthy habits? And what are your resolutions for 2018? If you care to share, post your comments below!
