Understanding Indy-speak<img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/685/image/blog_images/translation_please.jpg" width="715" height="476" alt="Confused woman holding paper with question mark" />
Like any city, Indianapolis has its own vernacular. We’ve compiled this glossary to help demystify this jargon for Indy newbies. Study and practice—in no time, you’ll sound like a local!
Boilermakers—The nickname for Purdue University’s sports teams, students and alumni. The nickname has <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Purdue_Boilermakers#Origin_of_%22Boilermakers%22_nickname" target="_blank">colorful origins</a>. See IU vs. Purdue.
Carb Day—No, this isn’t an Indy holiday in which you stuff yourself with pasta, bread and cake. Formally known as “Carburetion Day,” Carb Day is the final practice session before the running of the Indianapolis 500, currently held on the Friday before race day.
Carmel—Indy's affluent suburb to the north. Pronounced "CAR-mel" like the candy (not car-MEL). <a href="https://www.indyhomes.com/carmel/">Learn more about Carmel >></a>
Castleton—Refers to <a href="http://www.simon.com/mall/castleton-square" target="_blank">Castleton Square Mall</a> on the northeast side of Indy, as well as the area around the mall. All things Castleton are located at the Allisonville exit off of I-465.
The Circle—Refers to Downtown Indianapolis’ Monument Circle, the home of the iconic <a href="https://www.visitindy.com/indianapolis-soldiers-sailors-monument-monument-circle" target="_blank">Soldiers and Sailors Monument</a>. Every few years you might see resurrected plans to close off The Circle to automobile traffic -- transforming it into a pedestrian promenade. Indianapolis' vision for this redevelopment never gets much traction due to pushback from the businesses located on The Circle. When you do drive on The Circle, be mindful that traffic flows one-way counterclockwise.
Circle City—One of Indianapolis’ nicknames. See The Circle.
Crossroads of America—Official motto of the state of Indiana. Also serves as an unofficial nickname for Indianapolis due to the fact that four major interstate highways (I-69, I-70, I-65 and I-74) pass through the city.
Deer Creek Music Center—The original name of <a href="http://musiccenternoblesville.com/" target="_blank">Ruoff Home Mortgage Music Center</a>, located in Noblesville. Oldtimers prefer “Deer Creek" (its original name). The largest outdoor music venue in Indiana.
Eiteljorg—The <a href="https://www.eiteljorg.org/" target="_blank">Eiteljorg Museum of American Indians and Western Art</a>. The museum’s mission is to inspire an appreciation and understanding of the art, history and cultures of the American West and the indigenous peoples of North America. In fact, its contemporary Native art collection has been ranked among the world’s best.
The Fieldhouse—<a href="https://www.gainbridgefieldhouse.com/" title="Gainbridge Fieldhouse" target="_blank">GainBridge Fieldhouse</a>, home of the Indiana Pacers. You might also hear it referred to as "Bankerslife Fieldhouse" or “Conseco Fieldhouse,” its two former name. Not to be confused with <a href="http://butlersports.com/facilities/?id=1" target="_blank">Hinkle Fieldhouse</a>, Butler University’s revered sports venue.
Fort Ben—Shorthand for Fort Benjamin Harrison. Although the fort was decommissioned in 1995, it still serves as the center of <a href="https://www.indyhomes.com/lawrence-township/">Lawrence Township</a>, with much of it having been converted into a <a href="https://www.indyhomes.com/lawrence-township/historic-fort-harrison/">master-planned housing community</a> and <a href="http://www.in.gov/dnr/parklake/2982.htm" target="_blank">1,400-acre state park</a>.
Geist—Refers to Geist Reservoir and the residential area surrounding it. One of the most expensive residential areas in Central Indiana. <a href="https://www.indyhomes.com/geist/">Learn more about Geist >></a>
Hoosier Dome—Also known as the RCA Dome, the Hoosier Dome was home to the Indianapolis Colts for 24 seasons. The dome was demolished in 2008 to make way for an expansion of the neighboring Indiana Convention Center. Lucas Oil Stadium, the current Colts stadium is connected underground to the Indiana Convention Center.
Hoosier hospitality—The special friendliness you’ll find only in Indiana.
Hoosier Hysteria—We Hoosiers LOVE our basketball! And Hoosier Hysteria is the only fitting term for that heightened frenzy we feel for the sport we follow so closely, whether it’s at the high school, college or professional level.
Hoosiers—A native or inhabitant of Indiana. (DO NOT use “Indianan.” Just no.) The origins of the word “Hoosier” are disputed, but there are <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hoosier" target="_blank">many stories</a>, both scholarly and not so much. In any case, we Hoosiers embrace the moniker.
IMA—Indianapolis Museum of Art. Recently rebranded <a href="https://discovernewfields.org/" target="_blank">“Newfields,”</a> as the institution increases its emphasis on combining art with nature. In the fall and at Christmastime, Newfields hosts spectacular evening light festivals -- a tradition for many to visit annually.
IPS—Indianapolis Public Schools.
IU vs. Purdue—Indiana University and Purdue University are the two big state schools in Indiana, and share a classic rivalry that extends beyond basketball (see Hoosier Hysteria) and football—although that competition is intense. IU and Purdue grads will argue about anything; e.g., Who has the better campus? Whose graduates are smarter? You get the idea.
IUPUI—Stands for <a href="http://www.iupui.edu" target="_blank">Indiana University Purdue University Indianapolis</a>. Practice so it flows quickly: "I-U-P-U-I." Sometimes pronounced "ooey pooey" (usually tongue in cheek).
Keystone at the Crossing—An upscale business and shopping district located on the northside of Indianapolis at the intersection of East 86th Street and North Keystone Avenue. Although the mall located here is officially named “The Fashion Mall at Keystone,” you may hear locals use “Keystone at the Crossing” or simply “Keystone” when referring to it.
The lake—You’ll find that Indiana has scores of lakes, and many of your neighbors may own cottages or second homes at a nearby lake. When Hoosiers refer to a lake they tend to be less than specific, so you’ll hear sentences like, "I'm heading to the lake this weekend." The speaker could be referring to ANY lake, whether it’s Lake Michigan, Lake Monroe or Little Cedar Lake.
Lilly—Not a reference to the flower; rather, "Lilly" refers to <a href="http://www.lilly.com/" target="_blank">Eli Lilly & Co.</a>, the pharma giant headquartered in downtown Indianapolis.
Long's—As the newbie, you might be asked to pick up some Long's for the office. (Huh?) Your boss is referring to the insanely delicious melt-in-your-mouth doughnuts created daily at <a href="https://www.yelp.com/biz/longs-bakery-indianapolis-2" target="_blank">Long's Bakery</a> (located west of downtown off 16th St.). Be prepared for long lines, and remember, cash only! (Seriously, if you want to be the office hero, bring in some Long's!)
Lucas Oil—Shorthand for Lucas Oil Stadium, home of the Indianapolis Colts.
Market Square Arena—The now demolished downtown concert and sports arena was formerly home to the Indiana Pacers and is known as the venue in which Elvis Presley held his last concert.
MassAve—Shorthand for Massachusetts Avenue in downtown Indianapolis, and one of Indy's cultural districts. Its downtown location and proximity to dozens of restaurants, shops and galleries makes it a popular place to live. <a href="https://www.indyhomes.com/downtown/mass-avechatham-arch/">Learn more about MassAve >></a>
The Mini—Reference to the Mini Marathon, an annual half-marathon held in May. One of the premier events leading up the Indianapolis 500, it includes a lap around the Indianapolis Motor Speedway.
The Monon—Shorthand for the Monon Trail, Indy's popular rail trail that stretches from Downtown Indy to Westfield, a northern suburb.
Murat—Pronounced (MUR-ah). Reference to the Murat Shrine Temple or Murat Shrine Center, now known as Old National Centre. The theater portion of the building is now officially known as the Murat Theatre at Old National Centre.
Naptown—A nickname for Indianapolis. Its origins are unclear, but we like the story that jazz musicians hanging out along Indiana Avenue during the ’20 and ‘30s appropriated the fourth and most prominent syllable of IndiaNAPolis and came up with the informal, hip nickname. <a href="https://www.indyhomes.com/indianapolis-naptown/">We wrote about this in our blog a few years ago.</a>
north/south split—Turning north, the next section of I-70 along the east side of downtown Indianapolis travels concurrent with I-65. The two major interchanges at either end of this concurrency are often referred to as the "North Split" and the "South Split", forming the eastern leg of a section of freeways and surface streets locally known as the "Inner Loop" (around the central business district of Indy, and as opposed to the "Outer Loop" of the I-465 beltway).
Peyton—As in Peyton Manning, former Indianapolis Colts quarterback. Even though he retired in 2016 and was with the Denver Broncos at the time, he's still revered in Indy and as such, is referred to by first name only.
The Pyramids—Three pyramid-shaped office buildings on the northwest side of Indianapolis. You’ll know ‘em when you see ‘em!
The race—Yes, this is a reference to that race—the Indianapolis 500. “So, are you going to the race this weekend?”
Reggie—Reggie Miller of course, one of the most popular players with the Indiana Pacers. Widely considered the greatest Pacer of all time.
Riley or Riley's—Riley Hospital for Children.
The Ripple—Nickname for Broad Ripple, Indy's eclectic neighborhood northeast of downtown. Known for its bars, restaurants, and cute homes, as well as for being the location of David Letterman's childhood home. <a href="https://www.indyhomes.com/broad-ripple/">Learn more about Broad Ripple >></a>
SoBro—Not an official designation, but the name has caught on in recent years. South Broad Ripple’s borders are roughly Kessler to the north and 46th Street to the south, with College to the west and Keystone to the east. (Technically, a portion of SoBro falls within the Meridian-Kessler neighborhood.) Learn more about <a href="https://www.indyhomes.com/broad-ripple/">Broad Ripple</a> and <a href="https://www.indyhomes.com/meridian-kessler/">Meridian-Kessler</a> >>
spaghetti bowl—The north split is also called the "spaghetti bowl" due to the visual complexity of the overlapping freeways, ghost ramps, and overpasses that were originally intended as a connection to a never-built portion of I-69. See north/south split.
St. V's—St. Vincent Hospital.
The track—The track, i.e. the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, is where the race is run. “We’re heading out to the track for Carb Day.”
Unigov—The term coined for the entity formed when the governments of Indianapolis and Marion County consolidated in 1970.
The Village—Depending on the context, refers to <a href="https://www.indyhomes.com/broad-ripple/">Broad Ripple Village</a> or <a href="https://www.indyhomes.com/zionsville/the-village/">Zionsville's downtown</a>.
Zville—Nickname for Zionsville, an affluent suburb northwest of Indianapolis. <a href="https://www.indyhomes.com/zionsville/">Learn more about Zionsville >></a>

Fork + Ale House <br /><img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/685/image/carmel_restaurant_blog_fork_and_ale_front.jpg" width="440" height="330" style="float: right; margin: 6px;" alt="Fork + Ale House in Carmel, Indiana" />
Fork plus ale is too simple of an equation to capture the complexity of this sports bar, plus brewery, plus food-fresh dining experience.
Located on the Monon in the prime spot next to Sun King Spirits in the heart of Carmel, Fork + Ale House has open access to the ping-pong tables, wobbly around-the-world chairs (you’ll know what I mean when you try them out), and fire pit located in its courtyard.
You'll want to go here to try some original brews or to sit down for a traditional restaurant experience. Fork + Ale's kitchen-fresh food competes with Sun King Spirits', which offers only order and pick-up stations. The company is proud of its smoked meats, homemade pizza dough, and recipes that have been passed down for generations. Stop by on your bike ride down the Monon Greenway!
Located: 50 Veterans Way, Suite #150, Carmel<br /><a href="https://forkalehouse.com/" target="_blank">Details>></a>
<img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/685/image/convivio_photo.jpg" width="280" height="420" style="margin: 6px; float: right;" alt="Pasta at Convivio in Carmel, Indiana" />
Convivio <br />
Has great Italian food ever gone out of style? I didn’t think so. Italian cuisine speaks of romance, indulgence, and old-country nostalgia for those of us who have inherited some Sicilian and Italian genes. And even if you’re 100% not Italian and just a huge fan of Tony Soprano and The Godfather, dining on fried risotto, beef-pork meatballs and calamari might still feel like home.
If you want to experience Italy without paying to fly across the ocean to taste genuine Italian food, Convivio is the place to go.
Located: 11529 Spring Mill Rd., Suite #300, Carmel<br /><a href="https://www.convivioindy.com/" target="_blank">Details>></a>
3UP
<img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/685/image/3up_cocktail_bar.jpg" width="281" height="420" style="margin: 6px; float: left;" alt="Drinks at 3Up in Carmel, Indiana" />
People like living and working in high places, so why not drink there too? To access this bar, enter through a side door beside Anthony’s Chophouse and take the elevator up (to the third floor, if that wasn’t obvious). There you will find the swanky rooftop bar, 3UP. There is a seamless transition from indoor to outdoor spaces, with big doors leading out to a spacious patio. People lounge around glass-plated firepits, cupping artisanal cocktails with names like “Rooftop Roundabout” and “Carmel Cosmo.” A large trellis with colorful plants and flowers lends a hand to the feeling of privacy and coziness of this speak-easy-type atmosphere.
It isn’t only the swanky décor that makes one feel transported to New York City, it’s the people this bar attracts as well. There is the sense that work associates turn quickly from business to pleasure—influenced by sugary spirits and hush-hush gossip. If you’re looking for a place to go with a new friend after work, or want to take your partner to an upscale joint, 3UP is the place for you.

Carmel's new Cake Bake Shop opened on July 1 on the cul-de-sac of Carmel City Center. The new shop provides an additional eating option in the shopping district, alongside Matt the Miller’s Tavern, divvy, Eggshell Bistro and Hubbard and Cravens. This second location of the Indianapolis Cake Bake Shop reaches new heights in both size and menu. In comparison to Broad Ripple’s 36 seats, the Carmel location boasts 154 seats, and has a full bar in combination with the restaurant and bakery. Cake Bake has been featured in Williams-Sonoma, Oprah Winfrey's famous 'O' List in the 2018 issue of O magazine, and has received shout-outs from Oscar-winning actor Allison Janney...and more.<br /><br />Cake Bake's daily menu is available online... but here's a taster of their summer cakes: Chocolate Peanut Butter Crunch Cake, Gwendolyn’s Famous Earl’s Court Chocolate Cake, Lemon Blueberry Cake, Oprah's O List Mint Chocolate Chip Cake. You're welcome.

If you’ve ever been to Georgia or the Carolinas, you’re going to feel a wave of nostalgia upon entering Juniper on Main. <br /><br />Its featured food is “Southern Coastal,” and might have the power to transport you to the salty shores of the Atlantic Ocean. This outdoor-oriented restaurant boasts a large seating area sprawled beneath a pergola, Charleston style. Its advertised dishes are Lowcountry Boil, Pecan Crusted Catfish and Local Stout Glazed Short Ribs. Juniper on Main sits at the end of Main Street in the Carmel Arts & Design district, and is set to “open soon.”

Looking for a family-friendly activity, or a great date idea? One of our favorite Zionsville summer fun events is coming up on Saturday, August 3—the Zionsville Street Dance.
Let’s be honest, it’s hard to find a live music venue where people are actually dancing. But the Zionsville annual Street Dance doesn’t dance-shame!<br /><br /><img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/685/image/Zionsville_Street_Dance_instagram_and_blog_photo.png" width="422" height="422" style="float: right; margin: 6px;" alt="2019 Zionsville Street Dance" />During this summer fun family affair, everyone is encouraged to kick off their Sunday shoes, and cut loose--FOOTLOOSE! (Remember that part where Kevin Bacon flips around a warehouse in the tightest jeans known to man? What was the '80s?)
Here’s what you need to know about the Zionsville Street Dance:
This is the biggest Zionsville Chamber of Commerce fundraising event, which means that if you come—you are literally giving back to your community. Who knew dancing could be such a good deed?
The dance begins at 6 p.m. on Zionsville's Main Street, and the music will play until 11 p.m.
Presale tickets are $13, tickets at the door are $18. Children 10 and under are $5. A family pack (four to six family members) is $45 presale, $50 at the door—note that your family must arrive together.
If you don’t want to pay the online presale ticket convenience fee, tickets can be purchased in person at Akard True Value Hardware, Cobblestone or the Zionsville Chamber of Commerce.
The Endless Summer Band (ESB) will provide the musical entertainment this year!
The Indy Homes Team is thrilled to be one of the corporate sponsors this year!
This is a beer fest, food fest, and street festival combined.
This festival is great for first dates, couples, family fun, Bumble meet-ups--everyone!
THERE WILL BE 7,000 PEOPLE IN ATTENDANCE. With that said, this is what you should and shouldn’t bring:
Should bring:
Your pre-sale purchased tickets—<a href="https://www.zionsvillechamber.org/street-dance.html" target="_blank">purchasable here</a>—You won’t have to wait in the long lines for tickets (and it’s cheaper).
Your ID – Doesn’t matter if you have white hair or three generations of children in attendance with you, IDs will be requested if you want to drink.
Cash—Food and beer lines move a lot faster with cash.
Dancing shoes—You will literally be dancing in the street, so be mindful of your toes. With that said, if you can whip out moves in stilettos or flip flops, go for it! The “Endless Summer Band” (ESB) will be playing, so you’re going to want to dance!
A large appetite—You don’t want to miss out on the amazing food vendors because you decided to heat up your Thursday night leftovers!
Shouldn't bring:
Your dog (or cat?)—7,000 people means that there will be a lot of noise, movement, and might result in your dog consuming a child’s ice cream right out of their hands while you’re turned away. Keep that in mind before tugging your pup along with you. Also, who is going to hold Spot while you’re dancing?
Outside adult beverages—(But you knew that already, right?)
This is about YOU. And your dance moves. We hope to see you all there!

2018-08-09T08:15:00-07:002019-01-20T20:07:57-07:00Kristie Smithtag:indyhomes.com,2012-09-20:10470Starbucks addiction: The struggle is real<img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/685/image/blog_images/starbucks_addiction.jpg" width="714" height="591" alt="Starbucks addiction" />
Is there a Starbucks 12-step program?! Literally as the baristas at my new neighborhood Starbucks were getting to know me by name, my doctor told me that I needed to stop ingesting dairy. I really don’t eat that much dairy to begin with, but that unfortunately meant saying goodbye to my daily Starbucks latte—boo! It has been more difficult than I thought it would be. I started out strong, but slowly and surely I started sliding back into the habit. One latte here, another there—and BOOM! I had totally fallen off the wagon and was back to my daily Starbucks stop. Studies tell us that it takes about 66 days to establish a new habit, so when I fail, I just climb back in the saddle and try again. One day at a time.
Lattes add up!
One thing that keeps me going is thinking about how much money I spend on my lattes. At $3.98 a pop, I was spending $27.86 a week at the height of my habit. That doesn’t really seem like a lot, right? But that’s about $119.40 every month and a gulp-inducing $1,452.70 a year! Just on Starbucks coffee! If I stuffed that money into my piggy bank, I’d save $14,527 after 10 years, and if I invested it in something that averaged just 5 percent per year, I’d make $20,638.20 after 10 years. Absolutely mind-blowing! Most certainly the money I practically throw away on Starbucks could be put to better use.
Have you been able to kick the Starbucks habit? How did you do it? What other habits have you overcome in the desire for better health? Let us know in the comments below!

2018-01-17T10:34:00-07:002019-06-21T05:49:11-07:00Kristie Smithtag:indyhomes.com,2012-09-20:9989Olive oil tasting tours around the world<img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/685/image/blog_images/oil-USE-200x300.jpg" width="200" height="300" alt="olive oil tasting" style="float: right; margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px;" />Inhale the aromas of some of the world’s finest olive oils, and explore the varying tastes of different regions and the olives that are so deeply ingrained in so many exotic cultures worldwide. The use of olive oil began in 6000 BC and is used today for not only culinary purposes, but also medicinal, massage, oil lamps and more. Olive trees can live to be 300-400 years old and sometimes even older. Educate your palate on the vastly different variations of oils while touring olive oil facilities, and cultivate your knowledge of olive oil grades, characteristics and best uses for each type of oil. This is one of the latest ways to experience the world through your palate and will give you a new perspective and appreciation for the fine art that is olive oil today, not to mention, your taste buds won’t be able to return to the generics. Here are a few of our favorite places to experience the flavorful olive oils from around the world.
Tuscany, Italy: Le Baccanti
<img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/685/image/blog_images/olives-USE1-300x200.jpg" width="300" height="200" alt="fresh olives" style="float: right; margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px;" />Taste the authentic joys of Tuscany with a guided tour of the olive oil press. Famous for their extra virgin olive oil with an intense and spicy flavor, you are sure to return home with bottles to share. Through the tour you will not only discover the rich aromas of the native oils, but also learn the various techniques of how olive oil is extracted from olives and the importance of harvest periods, weather and heat during processing. It is best to visit during peak season when the olives are pressed from October through December. While visiting Florence go sailing on the Mediterranean Sea or take an ultra-luxury wine tour via helicopter, even relish in a weekend-long cooking class with Florentine locals.
Crete, Greece - Terra Creta
Begin your day in this exotic Greek island local, with a guided tour of the olive groves at Terra Creta, complete with a harvesting demonstration. Their experts will lead you to the olive mills where production is overseen and described thoroughly. A tasting is provided in their bottling room where you can sample three different extra virgin olive oils while learning about the best tips to properly store the oils as well as their health benefits, which can of course be shared as the perfect gift to take home to friends, eager to hear about your fabulous experiences. Discover all that Crete has to offer by visiting the Botanical Park of Crete or soaking up the sun at Balos Beach and Laggon.
Les Baux-de-Provence, France - Moulin Castelas
Les Baux-de-Provence is one of the most beautiful villages in France and home to Moulin Castelas olive groves and mill. The mill was built to control every stage in the oil-making process, from olive harvest dates to production and blending of delicious oils to ensure the best product possible. Similarly to a winery, the mill was designed specifically to bottle the oil’s fruitiness and freshness. You can visit the groves and mill to experience and appreciate the art of olive oil making while sampling the exquisite finished products. While in Les Baux-de-Provence, stay at the Mas de ‘Oulivie luxury hotel, with private terraces and a gourmet chef who cooks with products from locally grown markets.
What is your favorite olive oil or olive region? We would love to try some new ones.

Not sure if we will make a yummy brunch or venture out to one of the <a href="https://www.opentable.com/promo.aspx?m=44&pid=228" target="_blank">amazing restaurant brunch choices</a> around town.
For those of you who are all-in with Easter festivities for the kiddos, here are some <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/entry/easter-basket-diy_us_56ec6bcbe4b084c672205240?utm_hp_ref=easter" target="_blank">ideas for the cutest Easter baskets</a>.
<img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/685/image/blog_images/Happy-Easter-2014-300x195.jpg" width="300" height="195" alt="Happy Easter" style="float: right; margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px;" />As I think about the true meaning of Easter, it seems so frivolous to fret about any discomfort and inconveniences this past year has brought about. Nothing even close to compares to the pain and suffering that Jesus endured — all for me and you.
This Easter I am focused on gratitude. Each night my husband and I have been telling each other five gratitudes we have for each other. What an impact it has made on our marriage.
Here are my top gratitudes at this moment:
Wonderful husband, AJ, a true gift
My real estate career — I am so fortunate to have a job that I love & clients that are so special to me
The journey of building our new home
The joy of our temporarily living experience in downtown Indianapolis
The friendships and special relationships that I have in my life
As you ponder the gift of salvation given to you this Easter season, also take a moment to list out your five greatest gratitudes. I can’t wait to hear them so please share!

A surprising number of foods easily grow in your own Indianapolis home. Here are a few options to get you started:
Tomatoes
Imagine the pleasure of fresh, homegrown tomatoes in winter. Cherry, grape, or pear tomatoes are ideal. They will give you an on-going harvest throughout the cold weather.
<img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/685/image/blog_images/indoor-herbs.jpg" width="350" height="234" alt="growing vegetables and herbs indoors" style="margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px; float: right;" />Start your indoor winter crop of tomatoes from seeds. To jump-start the growing process, you can spawn indoor plants from cuttings of you outdoor plants. It’s easy. In late summer, cut a branch from an outdoor plant and trim it into several six-inch pieces, each with at least two sets of leaves. Remove the other foliage, leaving only the pair at the top of each cutting. Place the cuttings in a jar of water and leave on a sunny windowsill; the plants will root within days. Pot these up in containers that will allow for a root system, and grow them in a sunny outdoor spot until frost threatens; then bring them indoors. Tomatoes are sun lovers, so position them with great sun exposure. Tomato flowers are self-pollinating, but a gentle tap of the leaves will simulate the wind and bees rustling the flowers.

Garlic
One head of garlic can turn it into many new plants—and it’s easy! Break apart a store-bought (or homegrown) head of garlic, and plant each clove root side down, pointed-end up, in a container that’s at least eight inches deep. We recommend organic heads that haven’t been treated. The cloves should be buried one inch deep from the top tip, and at least four inches from the container side and other cloves. Place the container where it will get a minimum of eight hours of sun per day, and water as needed to keep the potting mixture moist but not wet. Snip off the tiny flowers as they grow so energy goes into producing the new garlic head. Eight to ten months later, when the leaves begin to turn brown, rejoice. Your crop of garlic heads is ready to harvest. Also, garlic is a natural pest repellent so try placing them next to your indoor tomatoes to ward off mites and aphids.
Scallions (spring onions)
Spring onions are easy and fun to grow indoors, and they don’t require a lot of space. When you’re trimming your store-bought scallions, save the cut off root and plant it in a container. Spacing is not an issue so jam as many roots into the pot as will fit, even allowing them to touch. The roots will sprout within days, and you can enjoy the oniony greenery throughout the winter.
More indoor vegetable plants to try: mustard greens, avocados, Eureka lemons, bean sprouts, rosemary, basil and watercress.
Growing food is an activity that gives back. Plant indoors in the Indianapolis fall and you can enjoy the fruits—and vegetables—of your labors all winter long.
Have any indoor veggie tips to share?

Each year, new diets and health plans emerge as hot topics—some may call them fads. However, the <a href="http://thepaleodiet.com/" target="_blank">Paleo Diet</a> that Indianapolis homes are adopting is backed by a long history. Popularizing of the Paleo Diet dates back to the 1970’s and is based on the hunter-gatherer ways of our cavemen ancestors, when farming grains (and gluten) was non-existent. Our entire Indy Homes Team kicked off 2014 by doing the <a href="http://www.whole9life.com/" target="_blank">Whole30 Challenge</a>.
The protein and produce-driven diet can easily be executed at home by adjusting your grocery list and with some thoughtful planning. Paleo-eating in Indy can be a great way to focus on sustainable and local shopping.
Here are some easy ways to eat Paleo in Indy:
Indianapolis Paleo provides an opportunity to support your local butcher and cattle farmers. For example, <a href="http://kincaidsmeatmarket.com/" target="_blank">Kincaid’s Meat Market</a> in Indianapolis and <a href="http://joesbutchershop.com/" target="_blank">Joe’s Butcher Shop</a> in Carmel offer locally raised beef cuts.
When heading out to the store seems to be too much of a hassle, resident of Indianapolis and surrounding cities like Carmel, Zionsville, Fishers, and Westfield can rely on produce and meat <a href="https://www.indyhomes.com/blog/year-round-fresh-produce-delivered-to-your-indianapolis-home/">home delivery services</a>. One Indy-area deliver service is GreenBEAN Delivery that offers organic, fresh meat and produce delivered to your front door.
Indianapolis has seen an influx of food trucks over the last couple of years. Even Paleo-focused food trucks are hitting the scene. Food trucks offer a great way to stay true the Paleo plan for lunch or even to pick up dinner to bring home. One such truck is <a href="http://www.cavemantruck.com/" target="_blank">Caveman Truck</a> whose tagline is “Bacon is greater than gluten.”
Another way to way to eat Paleo in Indy is by ordering from <a href="http://artiesonthego.com/" target="_blank">Artie’s on the Go</a>. This service delivers prepared Paleo meals to Indianapolis-area CrossFit gyms.
<img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/685/image/blog_images/paleo-snack.jpg" width="350" height="261" alt="Paleo Snack" style="float: right; margin-left: 10px; margin-right: 10px;" />Why is the Indianapolis community seemingly just getting on the Paleo bandwagon? Some may attribute this prehistoric diet’s recent popularity to the increasing presence of <a href="http://www.crossfit.com/cf-info/what-crossfit.html" target="_blank">CrossFit</a> gyms in Indianapolis. According to <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2014/01/07/health/best-diets-ranked/" target="_blank">CNN.com</a>, the CrossFit community has greatly influenced the support and following of this diet.
As with every new diet and nutrition regimen, it is vitally important to consult your health care provider before adopting the new practice. The Paleo Diet is not without critics, so consulting your doctor will help determine if it’s the right diet for you.

Improving health tops just about everyone on the Indy Homes Team New Year’s resolutions each year—myself included. This year our entire team is taking the <a href="https://whole30.com/" target="_blank">Whole30 Challenge</a> in January — nothing processed for 30 days. I also resolve to increase efficiency in my career and home life, seeking that ever-elusive balance.<br /><br />Recently, I’ve heard more and more about Indianapolis home grocery delivery services. This is a strong contender for helping anyone achieve the healthier and more efficient goals of this year. With fresh produce being delivered to your front door, fewer excuses make sense for stopping at fast food restaurants or quick meals that may be higher in fat and sodium.
Local organic is the core of some the services delivering to Indianapolis homes while others drop off national brands found in large grocers. Either type of service will encourage some meal planning based on the foods that are available. According to the <a href="http://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-meals/SLS-20076445" target="_blank">Mayo Clinic</a>, healthy meals start with planning. Here are two great services that will deliver fresh produce and groceries to homes in Indianapolis and the Indy suburbs:
Green B.E.A.N. Delivery
A green bin filled with fresh and seasonal produce—mostly local organic—arrives weekly. Before the week’s order is prepared, members can customize their order to include local meat and dairy products to compliment pre-selected seasonal produce. Even condiments, frozen goods, and other natural groceries can be added to the green bin. Bin sizes can be chosen on household size and only has a $35 minimum order each week.
And beyond the long list of benefits to the convenient and healthy service, Green B.E.A.N. Delivery also does a lot of community outreach on issues affecting the community residents like childhood obesity. This service’s “goal is make healthy and sustainably grown local food affordable, accessible, and convenient to the Midwest communities [it] serves.” <a href="http://www.greenbeandelivery.com/indianapolis/" target="_blank">www.greenbeandelivery.com/indianapolis/</a>
Peapod
Just about any brand you can think of can be delivered to homes in Indianapolis, Carmel, Zionsville, Noblesville and Brownsburg with more areas being added. All the brands you know and love in your local grocer can be delivered right to your home. You get to pick your delivery time within less than 24 hours, sometimes even the very next morning. Organic produce, dairy, and meat are also available. Even baby diapers can be added to your order!
Really it’s just like your grocery store coming to you with the click of a mouse. Peapod has daily specials and accepts coupons. The delivery fee depends on the size of the order and does not exceed $10. <a href="http://www.peapod.com/" target="_blank">www.peapod.com</a>
Have you tried either of these grocery delivery services? We’d love to hear about your experiences in the comments.

Like me, maybe you want to plan meals in advance, cook more, entertain regularly or keep a clutter-free kitchen. We’ll show you how to organize your kitchen to make cooking easier, fun and hassle-free. Making it tastier is up to you!
Tip #1: Get rid of unnecessary stuff
Treat your kitchen like you treat your closet: Every year or so, look at each item and ask yourself when you last used it. If the answer is “never” or “seldom,” it’s time to sell, donate, or toss it.
Gadgets exist for just about every function, but that doesn’t mean you need to purchase all of them. It becomes clutter. (Did you know clutter is a factor in depression?)
Couponers, remember: Today’s great deal can turn into tomorrow’s hoard. You might be surprised how liberating a minimalist kitchen can be.
Tip #2: Relocate seldom-used items
Holiday dishes, large roasting pans, and the good silverware—these items can all go on the highest shelf of your tallest kitchen cabinet, assuming you have the space. If you have space atop your cabinets, stash the items up there in a decorative basket.<br />If not, move these items to a dining-room buffet, the spare room closet, under the bed, or the basement—anyplace where they won’t be in the way of your daily cooking and cleaning.
Tip #3: Keep the things you use most close at hand
Pastry chef and food writer <a href="http://katherinesacks.com/" target="_blank">Katherine Sacks</a> has several suggestions: “We have a hanging rack and a wall knife strip. I also keep a jar near the stove for wooden spoons, my thermometer, and a small offset spatula that I use for everything.”
<img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/685/image/blog_images/kitchen-organization-indianapolis.jpg" width="244" height="242" alt="Organized Indianapolis kitchen" style="margin: 10px; float: right;" />Tip #4: A place for everything, and everything in its place
“Just like in a professional kitchen, if you always put something in the same place, then you’ll always know where it is,” Sacks says.
So, where are those places and where are they not?
Tip #5: Avoid hot locations for food storage
Outside of the fridge, food should be stored in a cool, dry location. I once stored my wine in the cabinet above the fridge. I had a small kitchen and didn’t want to accidentally break the bottle. Instead, the wine soured from the heat of the refrigerator compressor and coils. Oops.
Mounting a spice rack on a wall by the oven or in the sun, where it’s exposed to light and heat, is the most common food storage mistake. Herbs and spices should have a scent. And green herbs shouldn’t be beige.
Tip #6: Keep items near their place of use
Store pots and pans, cooking utensils, potholders, and spices and herbs near the oven or cooktop.
But, per tip #5, put spices in a drawer or on a rack inside a cabinet rather than directly near the heat source. Also, you can store bulk spices (if you go through a lot) in the pantry, and just keep a small amount in a jar near the stove, then replenish as necessary.
Dishes and silverware should be near the dishwasher or the table, for serving.
Keep cleaning supplies near the sink.
Tip #7: Heavy things don’t go in high places
I learned this lesson after storing a set of glass mixing bowls on an upper cabinet shelf, then nearly knocking myself unconscious trying to get them down when I wanted to bake. Now they go in the bottom drawer of a base cabinet.
Tip #8: Place like with like
If you are a baker, a tip is to keep flour, sugar, and baking soda on one cabinet shelf; spices on a second; and nuts, raisins, and syrups on a third, so everything you need in one place. For you, this might mean keeping all bowls on one shelf and all plates on a second, or keeping all the canned goods together in one area.
Tip #9: Customize your cabinets
Not everyone has a pantry. And while storing food in lower cabinets might work great for some, that could be disastrous for those with small children.
Also add cabinet storage by adding more shelves to fit in shorter items like coffee mugs and tumblers or a stack of plates. Hanging storage racks on doors is another option.

2013-01-01T21:42:00-07:002017-11-27T19:38:21-07:00Kristie Smithtag:indyhomes.com,2012-09-20:10208Is your Indianapolis kitchen making you fat? When it comes to weight gain, we blame our genes, our metabolism, and wrong foods that taste so good. But it’s just possible that our Indianapolis kitchens are to blame. Here’s why.
<img src="https://assets.site-static.com/userfiles/685/image/blog_images/Indianapolis-kitchen-300x200.jpg" width="300" height="200" alt="Woman weighing herself on a bathroom scale." style="float: right; margin: 10px;" />Dieters beware: Your dream kitchen remodel may be your biggest nightmare. Experts say that big and attractive kitchens contribute to big and unattractive waistlines.
Just shoot me now. I love my big kitchen — used for parties, entertaining, family gathering, and plus it doubles as my home office at times.
“If a kitchen gets you there and keeps you there, you’re going to increase your food consumption,” says Mark Blegen, an associate professor at St. Catherine University in Minnesota, who studies why people eat. “Even if you add only 10 extra calories a day, you’re going to gain weight over the long term.”
You mean remodeling a small and dreary kitchen into a big and fabulous one is hazardous to our health?
“Getting people to think that this kitchen may be causing me to gain weight is a huge shift,” Blegen says. “But if people want to take an honest look at their weight, they ought to take a look at every aspect of their environment.”
Weight management depends on many things — genetics, metabolism, running shoes that live under your bed. But calories-in and calories-out also depend on increasing and decreasing barriers to food. Kitchen size, design, storage, and appliances all erect or destroy those physical and psychological barriers. Here’s how.
Kitchen-great room combos: As big kitchens multitask as family rooms, homework centers, and offices, we spend more time around food. “If it’s right there in front of you, odds are you’ll want to consume it,” Blegen says. In fact, a seminal study on eating and environment found that moving a candy bowl 6 feet away from eaters reduced their consumption by 50%. It’s hard to move food away from you in a kitchen.
Traditional design: Kitchen designers are slaves to minimizing the distance between a kitchen’s sink, stove and refrigerator — its “work triangle.” But researcher Brian Wansink says the smaller the triangle, the more we’re eating when we’re supposed to prepping.
Too-handy storage: Kitchen storage puts you within reaching distance of calories. Walk-in pantries are the worst, because they encourage buying in bulk and stockpiling. Not only does stockpiling put you within steps of huge quantities of food, but the cost of buying and storing that bargain 10-lb. bag of Jasmine rice puts pressure on you to eat it. You can’t win for losing.
Tempting refrigerators: Upscale, glass-front refrigerators bring you face-to-face with last night’s leftovers, which call to you like sirens. And placing the fridge next to the eating nook makes it easier — and more likely — to grab a second helping.
Open-shelf cabinets: They remove that last, slim barrier between you and food — the cabinet door. “The more visible and the more convenient the food is in cupboards, the more likely you are to take it,” says Wansink, author of “Mindless Eating.” Take a look at his video, which shows how kitchens sabotage your diet.
Remodeling your kitchen? Give it the lean treatment
If your kitchen is tempting you to overeat, bite the bullet (no calories in that) and plan a remodel— keeping these strategies in mind.
Size the kitchen with food preparation, not munching, in mind. Instead of building an eat-in kitchen, devote space to prep islands, professional ranges, double ovens, and a couple of dishwashers. Then eat in a separate room, which reduces your temptation for seconds.
Place the refrigerator away from the kitchen entrance so you’re not tempted to graze the moment you enter the room. Also, choose smaller refrigerators with bottom freezers, which require you to stoop to scoop that ice cream. And take those vegetables out of the crisper and put them on a center shelf, where they stare you in the face each time you open the fridge door.
Install cabinets with solid doors. If you like the look of glass, opt for opaque or antique glass that hides contents.
Avoid walk-in pantries that can store bushels of food. Instead, choose smaller cabinetry with pull-out shelves that reveals all the healthful food they will contain. (We live in hope.)
Keep televisions, iPads, and other distractions out of the kitchen. The less you focus on the food you’re eating, the more you’ll eat.
Install bright lights, which discourage eating. Researchers don’t know exactly why harsh lighting means less eating. Perhaps we spend less time in places with annoying lighting. So use task lighting to help in food prep, save you money on dimmers, and keep lights bright.
Kitchen tweaks: No remodel planned? No problem
If you’ve like me and have already built the kitchen of your dreams or you’re not planning a full-scale remodel soon, a little reorganizing can help you cut calories.
If you already have open shelves, place dishware and pots there, not food. If you must put food where you can see it, store it in opaque containers.
Remove stools from around your prep island. You burn more calories standing than sitting, and eventually you’ll move to more comfortable spaces away from food.
Store fattening foods in a garage freezer or refrigerator; you’ll think twice about dessert if you must walk to the garage to get it. And if you do indulge, you’ll burn a few calories fetching those sweets.
Opt for one or two of the remodeling tips we noted above if you want to do a little more than reorganize but less than a full-on remodel.
What part of your kitchen encourages you to eat? Would you give it up to lose a few pounds?
