Carmel has been voted the #1 place to live in the U.S. THREE times, just in 2017! Its school system, Arts and Design District and high property values make it a great choice among Indy’s suburbs.

Carmel Arts & Design District

Carmel Arts & Design District

Just north of Indianapolis, Carmel is known for many things, including its schools, its high per capita income and its roundabouts. That’s right—roundabouts! Carmel has more than 100—the most in the U.S.—so brush up on roundabout etiquette before you head to Carmel!

With almost 90,000 residents, Carmel has grown a great deal over the past 20 years or so. It’s now home to more than 40 corporate headquarters, including Delta Faucet, CNO Financial and Monster.com. Old Town Carmel has grown into an Arts and Design District in the past decade and includes many independent restaurants, galleries, shops, a performing arts center and a large city government complex. This walkable neighborhood, which is adjacent to the Monon Trail, includes neotraditional townhomes and renovated cottages.

Most of Carmel consists of subdivisions though—from older established neighborhoods to newer homes to luxury custom homes. All price points are available. However, relatively higher taxes come along with Carmel’s many amenities—excellent schools, public parks, healthcare facilities and library system. Most Carmel citizens would tell you that it’s worth it—there’s a reason Carmel has been voted the #1 place to live in the United States by Niche.com, Wall Street 24/7 and SmartAsset.com in 2017 and CNN Money magazine in 2012.
